A Russian billionaire has bought the entire Fabergé collection owned by the family of Malcolm Forbes and is taking it back to Russia.
Fabergé Collection Bought by Russian For a Return Home
Hands down, the star of the show has to be the burly Moscow-born Californian Andre Ruzhnikov. This dealer founded the Aurora Fine Art Investments Fund with the billionaire Mr. Vekselberg. He says that he has already doled out tens of millions of dollars on Russian art and antiques. To fund Aurora’s expenses, Mr. Ruzhnikov is selling a cache of Fabergé, Russian silver and paintings. He said he brought merchandise valued at $50 million to the fair.
Although the principals have declined to disclose the amount of the capital investment, the fund, according to Ruzhnikov, intends to spend $100m on Russian works of art in the next year and is aggressively pursuing high-quality Russian works from private or trade sources. “After dealing for 30 years, I know who has what,” says Ruzhnikov, “and I am approaching owners and telling them that the time has come to cash in.” What has slipped past his radar is being flushed out via a series of prominent ads in the international art press.
As transparent as a bowl of borscht
