A traditionally painted icon of the Archangel Michael represented as Archistrategos (“chief commander” Greek) or heavenly warlord. The saint is shown in military attire, riding a winged charger, blowing a trumpet, holding a closed Book of Gospels, a censer of holy incense, a lance, and a crucifix. Between his spread arms is a rainbow’s arch. In the top left corner of the composition, surrounded by scrolling clouds, is Christ’s mandorla. The upper border is inscribed in Old Slavonic: “The image of Saint Archistrategos Michael”.
