An icon of St Michael Archangel of the Apocalypse with two male family saints on the borders: Sts. Alexander Nevski and Mitrophan of Voronezh. The saint is represented as Archistrategos (“chief commander” Greek) or heavenly warlord, who defeats the Antichrist. He rides a winged red horse amidst a realistically painted landscape, holding a closed book of Gospels and a censer in one hand and a lance in the other. In the upper left corner amid clouds appears Christ Emmanuel before the Hetoimasia (Greek ἑτοιμασία, “preparation”), or the Prepared Throne of the Second Coming.
