An icon of St Michael Archangel of the Apocalypse, with two saints on the borders: Guardian Angel and St Nikita. St Michael is depicted in warrior’s attire, with wings, riding a winged red horse and blowing a horn. His left hand holds a closed book of the Gospel, while the right holds a spear with which he slays the Antichrist. Above his head is a rainbow arch. The iconography is based on a passage from the Book of Revelation (12:7-9) describing a cosmic battle between the Archangel Michael and the devil. In the upper left corner, amid clouds, appears Christ Emmanuel before the Hetoimasia (Greek ἑτοιμασία, “preparation”), or the Prepared Throne of the Second Coming.
