A silver-gilt presentation cup of Neo-Renaissance design. The cup of baluster shape stands on a domed foot, the domed cover is surmounted by a statuette symbolising of the city of Reval: an armour-clad female warrior leaning on her shield and holding a cross and an anchor. The body of the cup is chased with scrolling foliage and four cartouches with inscriptions in German: ‘To their Alderman Karl Ferdinand Gahlinbeck / at the occasion of his silver wedding anniversary May 18, 1863 / presented in grateful attitude / from the great Guild of Brewers in Reval‘.
Alexander Kordes (1824-1868) was a 19th-century Russian silversmith and jeweller, owner of a workshop and a store. Since 1839 Kordes carried out orders for the Imperial Cabinet, in 1840 he was appointed an official purveyor to the Imperial Russian Court.
