The Italian artist Caravaggio (1571-1610) was among the greatest painters of the Baroque period, famed for the powerful way he handled light and dark; his deep psychological realism; and his lifelike rendering of historical and religious characters. The artist had no known pupils or collaborators, but in the two decades after his death there flourished in Italy and northern Europe a Baroque style of painting that was profoundly indebted to his work. The artists who followed became known as the Caravaggisti – followers of Caravaggio.
