The Royal Prussian court painter Johann Wilhelm Barth came to St.Petersburg in 1809. During his sojourn in the Russian capital, the artist created a series of meticulous views of the city. The present painting, dated 1811, shows a view of the Neva River in St.Petersburg towards the Peter and Paul Fortress. The State Russian Museum holds similar views of St.Petersburg by Barth.
