The Royal Prussian court painter Johann Wilhelm Barth came to St Petersburg in 1809. During his sojourn in the Russian capital, the artist created a series of meticulous views of the city. The present painting, dated 1811, shows a view of the Neva River in St Petersburg towards the Peter and Paul Fortress. The State Russian Museum holds similar views of St Petersburg by Barth.
