The watercolour is a replica of a portrait from the famous Khomutov collection, a series of watercolour portraits of officers of the Life Guards Hussar Regiment painted by Alexander Ivanovich Klünder (1802-1874) in 1838-40. The collection consisted of a series of watercolour portraits of the Life Guards Hussar Regiment officers commissioned by the Life Guards, who wished to present a commemorative gift to their regimental commander, General M.G. Khomutov. The collection consisted of about 60 portraits, including four images of the famous Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov, who served in the Regiment after returning from his first Caucasian exile. Today, most of the Khomutov collection is in the State Hermitage and the Pavlovsk Palace Museum.

Subsequently, Klünder created illustrations for the “Historical Description of Clothes and Arms of Russian Warriors”, painted portraits of Emperor Nicholas I, Count M.N. Musin-Pushkin, Prince M.B. Lobanov-Rostovsky, Prince D.P. Volkonsky and other members of the Russian aristocracy.
