He studied in St Petersburg under Konstantin Savitsky; in 1904, he moved to France, where continued his education at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris. In 1908, he opened an art school in Nice. Between 1911 and 1914, Mako participated in exhibitions of the Russian Cubo-Futurist avant-garde group “Koltso” in Kharkiv.
