The cover of the box is decorated in plique-à-jour enamel with three nymphs with upraised arms centring on a butterfly and surrounded by flowers and ribbons on stippled ground, the sides are ornamented with stylized flowers divided by turquoise entrelac bands in cloisonné enamel.
Ovchinnikov – alongside with Fabergé, one of the most important silver- and goldsmith of the nineteenth-century Russia. In 1881 the firm was awarded the title of the supplier of the Imperial Russian court. Its production was also highly praised by many other European royal courts: Ovchinnikov was the official purveyor to King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy and King Christian IX of Denmark.
