19th century

tempera and gold on wooden panel

31.2 x 26.4 cm

Painted in warm, earthy colours in the traditional style, the icon portrays the Mother of God of Iversk. The Mother of God and the Christ Child are depicted against a gold leaf background. The Virgin is shown bust-length, wearing a gold-embroidered maphorion with an azure blue lining, richly jewelled and with detailed tassels on the sleeves; with her left hand she points towards her infant son, as a path of salvation. Seated on her lap dressed in a folded himation, spangled with stars, and holding a scroll in his left hand, a symbol of divine revelation, the Christ Child raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing. The outer border is painted with St.Mary of Egypt and the Angel Guardian.
