A finely painted Palekh school icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The icon is encased in a silver-gilt oklad extensively engraved with scrolling floral decoration. St. Nicholas is depicted bust-length against the red background. According to the iconographic tradition, the saint is presented as an elderly man; his role as a bishop is emphasised by his insignia – the white omophorion adorned with large black crosses.
