“Geisha Girls”, dated 1922, is one of the later Japan-inspired paintings of E.A. Hornel, one of the leaders of the influential modern artists’ group known as the Glasgow Boys. The painting was produced after the artist’s second trip to Japan in the 1920s. From his journey, Hornel brought a large collection of photographs he took or collected during his stay there. These images provided a source of inspiration for his later oeuvre. Rendered in a bright, luminous palette with expressive brushstrokes, these canvases showcase Hornel’s refined, highly decorative style.
