The Royal Prussian court painter Johann Wilhelm Barth came to St Petersburg in 1809. During his sojourn in the Russian capital, the artist created a series of meticulous views of the city. The present painting, dated 1811, depicts a panorama of Kamenny Island, one of the most picturesque areas of St Petersburg. During the 19th century, the island was a favourite summer retreat of the Russian nobility.
