The leading French jeweller and goldsmith Louis Aucoc was born in 1850 in Paris to a family of established goldsmiths that counted King Louis Philippe, Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie among their clients. Louis was responsible for introducing a new line of jewellery to the firm, embracing the growing appetite for Art Nouveau design. These pieces were highly ornamental. He made use of diamonds and other precious stones, combining them in complex designs with enamel, horn and pearls. In 1877 he purchased the established Parisian jewellers Lobjois, and changed its name to La Maison Aucoc.
