Karl Karlovich Piratsky was a military painter and graphic artist of Prussian descent. Awarded a grant by Tsar Nicholas I in 1828, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he specialised in battle scenes. Around this time, he began to paint almost exclusively in watercolours. Nicholas I appointed Piratsky to the position of court artist in 1836, and commissioned him to document the uniforms and weaponry of the Russian military.
