Ilya Repin1844 – 1930

Ilya Yefimovich Repin was born in the Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire, now Ukraine, and became one of the most celebrated Russian painters in history. He received informal training as a painter of Orthodox icons from local artists and later studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St.Petersburg under the celebrated portraitist Ivan Kramskoy. Influenced by Delacroix and en plein air painting, in 1878 he joined the ‘Wanderers’ (Peredvizhniki): a group of artists that rejected the genre painting prevalent at the time in favour of the realistic depiction of Russian life and history.
