Production of icons in central Russia reached its peak in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, though several examples can also be found dating from the seventeenth. It is often difficult to attribute artists for the individual icons produced in Central Russia. This is common throughout the Orthodox icon tradition. Conceived as religious objects rather than work of art, icons are rarely signed with the name of their painter
